Taoyuan offers help to Micron, Federal workers after downsizing

Taoyuan City government said on Friday that it has initiated a special mechanism to assist workers of U.S. dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip supplier Micron Technology, Inc. and Taiwan tire brand Federal Corp. after the two companies decided to downsize.

According to the Taoyuan’s Office of Employment Services and Vocational Training, Micron will cut its workforce by 150 employees in Taiwan by offering preferential severance packages as the DRAM maker downsizes globally.

Micron, which has a plant in Taoyuan, has announced plans to lay off 10 percent of its global workforce as the semiconductor industry worldwide faces inventory adjustments at a time of weakening demand for electronic gadgets due to fast growing inflation and aggressive rate hikes by major central banks around the world. International news media even reported the layoffs could increase to 15 percent of Micron’s total workforce, which would impact 7,200 employees worldwide.

For its part, Federal is planning to lay off more than 200 workers in March and April after having announced earlier this month that it will suspend production at a plant in Taoyuan’s Guanyin District, the office said in a statement.

According to Federal, the decision to suspend production at the Gunayin plant resulted from anti-dumping tariffs imposed by the United States, a spike in raw material prices and interruptions in consumption by COVID-19.

The office said it has set up a special one-stop task force for affected workers at Micron and Federal.

Employees at Micron should call the 03-333130 hotline, the office said. In addition, it has scheduled a hiring campaign for laid off Micron workers for March 10, when 32 companies are expected to offer 1,500 jobs openings.

The office said it will brief workers affected by the downsizing of Federal at the end of February and March of their rights and benefits and offer to help them find new jobs.

Two hiring events will be held on on Feb. 21 and March 15 for the Federal workers, with about 1,300 job openings expected to be available, the office added.

Director Liu Yu-yi (???) said the office has been kept informed of the downsizing at Micron and Federal, is ready to assist affected employees and will do its best to minimize the impact.
