Two arrested on suspicion of smuggling marijuana worth NT$240 million

More than 122 kilograms of marijuana worth NT$240 million (US$7.81 million) has been seized and two suspects arrested in a recent drug bust, according to New Taipei police on Saturday.

Acting on tip-offs, the shipment of illicit drugs arriving from Canada was seized by customs officers at Keelung Port in July, Luzhou police precinct said in a press release.

The marijuana totaling 122.84 kg was found packed in 391 plastic bags, each weighing about 310 grams and stashed in a container carrying furniture, the precinct said.

Authorities later tracked down the shipment’s consignee, a 39-year-old suspect identified by his last name Chen (?), who was arrested in Zhongli District, Taoyuan in September, police said.

Following his arrest, police identified and detained a second suspect surnamed Lai (?), who was later determined to have a history with the Bamboo Union gang, they said.

Due to the sheer volume of drugs involved in the case, a court granted a request by prosecutors to have Chen detained and held incommunicado, while Lai was also detained.

Both men are being investigated for violations of the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act, with the case handed over to the Keelung District Prosecutors Office for further investigation.
